Housing

Over 300,000 people aged 30 and over are currently living at home with their parents, trapped in a housing limbo where they earn too little to afford a mortgage yet too much to qualify for social housing. Poblacht Nua calls on the government to set out a realistic, fully costed housing plan that decisively ends the scandals of homelessness and endless housing waiting lists, while also raising the income thresholds for local authority housing so that working adults who remain locked out of the housing market can finally access secure, affordable homes.

Cost of living

This government has set overly ambitious climate targets in its eagerness to appease Europe, doing so at the direct expense of ordinary people. Poblacht Nua demands an immediate reversal of the increase in fuel taxation, which unfairly punishes workers and families who cannot afford electric vehicles or the high cost of installing solar power in their homes. Instead of forcing the burden of climate action onto those least able to carry it, Poblacht Nua advocates for practical and balanced environmental measures, such as large-scale reforestation and habitat restoration, that genuinely mitigate climate change without undermining living standards or penalising working households.

Immigration

Poblacht Nua believes that the government’s open-border approach has been a political and economic failure, placing unsustainable pressure on housing, healthcare, and other already overstretched public services. We oppose this policy and call for firm, lawful, and transparent management of Ireland’s borders that puts the national interest first. Poblacht Nua demands that entry to the state be strictly regulated, and that individuals who enter Ireland illegally, without proper documentation, or who have a criminal record be refused entry and removed from the state in accordance with the law, ensuring a fair, orderly, and credible immigration system.

Healthcare

Poblacht Nua rejects the current two-tier healthcare system, which has locked hundreds of people out of timely and proper medical care based on their ability to pay. We seek to replace this inequitable model with a truly universal healthcare system in which everyone contributes fairly and, in return, enjoys equal access to high-quality health services when they need them. Poblacht Nua also prioritises major investment in mental health and addiction services, particularly in high-need and disadvantaged communities, to ensure care is accessible, preventative, and rooted in dignity for all.

Sovereignty and Neutrality

Poblacht Nua believes that the people of Ireland alone have the right to determine the future of the entire island and therefore objects to Britain's continued claim to sovereignty over the Six Counties in the north of Ireland. The party also opposes what it sees as the steady erosion of Ireland's sovereignty through increasing EU influence over national decision-making, a process supported by the main Irish political parties. Poblacht Nua advocates for an independent all-Ireland republic that makes its own laws and policies in the interests of its citizens. Poblacht Nua also supports investment and developing our defence forces to be capable of national defence without reliance on any other nation. The party also strongly supports Ireland's long-standing policy of military neutrality, arguing that neutrality has helped Ireland maintain an independent foreign policy, contribute to international peacekeeping through UN missions, avoid involvement in military alliances and conflicts, and strengthen its reputation as an impartial voice in international affairs. Poblacht Nua also point to Ireland's history of diplomacy and humanitarian engagement as evidence that the country can play a constructive role on the world stage without joining military alliances.

Irish Language, Culture and History

Pádraig Pearse reminded us that "A country without a language is a country without a soul." Poblacht Nua believes that the Irish language is not simply a subject to be taught in schools, but a living symbol of our nation's identity, heritage and independence. We are committed to restoring Irish as the national language of the Irish people through practical support, greater investment in education, and increased opportunities to use the language in everyday life. We also believe that Ireland's history, culture and traditions have been neglected for too long and deserve far greater support from the national government. Protecting our heritage is about far more than attracting tourists—it is about preserving the story of our nation, honouring those who came before us, and ensuring future generations understand and take pride in their Irish identity. A nation that values its language, history and culture is a nation that safeguards its future.
